

Those who watched the extended cut actually got to see Saruman die in a spectacular fashion. How the magical sphere escaped from the tower was never addressed. Those who only watched the theatrical editions last saw Saruman in the dark tower Orthanc watching Isengard flooded and destroyed by the Ents at the end of The Two Towers. The only time he's mentioned in The Return of the King is when Ents leader Treebeard says his power is "no more." Pippin discovers Saruman's seeing-stone, the Palantir, in the water right outside the tower. In the film's original theatrical cut, every major character of the series was given a satisfying conclusion to their story except for Saruman the White. But it could be argued that the most egregious error the filmmakers made with Return of the King was removing Saruman from the final cut.

Very few trilogies in cinema history wrapped up their story as well as The Lord of the Ringsdid with The Return of the King. However, despite still being a universally beloved film, the movie received criticism for having an extended epilogue.
